The Mwito community of Rwanda is home to many coffee farmers that grow your beloved Westrock Coffee. One year ago, we came alongside Create Assemblages and our sister company, Rwanda Trading Co to open the Mwito Pre-Primary school that overlooks Lake Kivu.
Spanish architect Nerea Amorós Elorduy designed the school with education and sustainability at the forefront of the project. Her unique building style supports an environment that inspires creativity and learning while the construction itself was develop aimed at a lower carbon footprint. Elorduy was able to do this by using recycling materials from the original Westrock Coffee building that housed Rwanda Trading Company for nine years.
Prior to COVID, the school was able to accommodate up to 320 students ages three through five and continues to provide students and their families with access to clean water all year round.
Although COVID has brought uncertain times, we're eagerly awaiting the day that its doors are open and learning will resume.
As we look back and celebrate this day, we can't imagine doing this without the support you give when you purchase Westrock Coffee.
We hope that as you read this and see the faces of this community, you're reminded that your purchases matter and the coffee you drink tells a much greater story than you may ever know.
